Christmas Bundles of Joy
These beautiful babies were discovered at a church in Chicago by one of its custodial workers. In the church's entranceway, the worker saw a car seat with a newborn baby stirring inside sitting next to an electric heater on the wall. When he moved blankets to get a closer look, he got his second shock of the morning. Sleeping next to the baby was a twin.
The police say newborn fraternal twins found abandoned were just hours old.The babies' umbilical cords were even still attached when they were hospitalized in good condition. The hospital’s ER staff the gave them names to fit the Christmas season --Mary and Joseph.
Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is investigating the discovery as a neglect case because the Illinois' Abandoned Newborn Protection Act allows mothers to legally leave an infant at a staffed police station, firehouse, hospital or emergency medical facility. Churches do not qualify under the state's safe haven law so police are seeking the mother. They said that she may be charged with some sort of abandonment/neglect crime.
My Take On It …..
I know that some may not agree with me, but I just don’t think that this is right. This mother is probably young and poor. I’m sure she did not know that you could not leave your baby at a church under the Safe Haven Law, hell neither did I.
It’s not like she meant to cause these children any harm. In my heart I know that she was trying to do the right thing. Think of all of the mothers that have dumped their babies in garbage cans, rivers, and in the woods. She took those babies somewhere safe. Somewhere that she knew that would be found and that they could be care for.
Some lucky person(s) will be so happy and thankful to adopt these babies. I almost want them myself. I think that the authorities need to spend more time trying make sure that these babies are placed with a good family and go out a try to solve other unresolved crimes in the area. In a city as large as Chicago, I know that there is a lot more that they can be doing than wasting resources on a mom that made the RIGHT decision for her, which was not to keep her babies, but just went about it the WRONG way.
What do you think?

I agree with you. Whomever the mother is was most likely trying to do the right thing but just didn't know that the church wasn't a legal place she could leave them.
I can only imagine how hard it is for a sober mother to give birth and leave them. Once I first layed eyes on my baby I was hooked on her.
Stories like this are soooo sad and they are pretty black children! People are quick to adopt arm babies so they will have a home very soon.
@ Shawn - Maybe she did think churches were included. Plus alot of churches have services every day during the week of Christmas so maybe thats why she did it.
I honestly think that she was just trying to do what she thought was best at the time.
I hope she doesn't change her mind to, because she will be in for a very rude awakening.
I can't hate on the mother, who was young and poor. I'm sure there is a story behind what happened. No telling what she was up against, etc.
I swear the law picks the dumbest things to get in hissy fit about....a church is a safe haven!
Like yesterday (sorry to go off), I was at Rite-Aid with my hubby and son, and this little boy wanted candy (he couldn't have been more than a year-16 months old), and his mother was screaming at him, and I guess he got scred, and ran out of the store (away from her) with the candy.
She gripped him up by the collar of his coat, and was like "didn't I fucking tell you not to leave the damn store? What the fuck is wrong with you?" And she threw him on the floor. No exaggeration, I see this stuff just about everyday.
They feel as if they are entitled to do this to their children beause they 'own' them. I was going to do a post about it, but I didn't want to seem 'racist', so I decided against it.
I worry about the future of America...
And to have them bundled up.
I dont know the details of adoption... but isnt it free for a mother to give up their child for adoption? Or does it cost them to go through all that? I figured it be free for the Mom... and only cost the couple adopting the child...
I may be wrong.
Ive been to orphanages in the Dominican Republic... babies left for dead on the streets... found barely living... so sad.
I hope we can adopt a child one day :-) We will see!
Although around the holidays a day might pass that we dont go check around.
Thankfully those babies were found. Hospital or Police station may have been a better place now that I think about it...
2005 will be the first year in almost 20 where a newborn baby hasn't been abandoned in Massachusetts, thankfully.
In the four years prior to passing our law 13 babies were abandoned and 6 of them died, 4 were found close to death and three were brought to safe places similar to a safe haven law.
Knowledge of the law before a crisis is the most important thing in Baby Safe Haven laws.
There's always a couple who are so deserving, but can't have children. Momma may have just blessed someone through her actions.
