Coretta Scott King

Coretta Scott King
1927-2006

I was on my way to work this morning when I heard the news. I immediately gasped in shock because I felt like I had just heard of the death of someone I knew personally.

The woman who turned a life once devastated by her husband’s assassination, into one devoted to preserving his legacy of human rights and equality had died.

As soon as I got to work I called my sister and I asked:

Nic: “Did you hear that Coretta Scott King died last night in her sleep?”

Sister: “No!”

Nic: “Yes, apparently her daughter went to try to wake her last night and she was not able to. She has peacefully slipped away in her sleep.”

Sister: “Oh my goodness! I heard them talking about her on the radio, but I missed the beginning. I didn’t know that this was why they were talking about her.”

This was the beginning of a short discussion about what she meant to our lives.

I first began to conscientiously think about the possible death of this civil rights icon when she was admitted to Atlanta's Piedmont Hospital in the fall of 2005. She had suffered from a stroke that left her weakened, unable to walk, and barely able to speak. I thought to myself and prayed that she would make it and she did, for a while at least.

In her earlier years, Coretta Scott was studying voice at the New England Conservatory of Music and planning on a singing career when a friend introduced her to Martin Luther King (Click here to see MLK post), a young Baptist minister working toward a Ph.D. at Boston University. It’s my understanding that she was not even interested in meeting him. But before she knew it, she was in love and they were married in 1953. The following year they moved to Montgomery, AL., and it was there that Dr. King would begin his ministry.

When Dr. King was assassinated in 1968, Scott King did not focus on her grief, but rather directed that energy into action. Just days later, she led a march through the streets of Memphis, and later that year took his place as a leader of the Poor People's March in Washington, D.C.

She kept his dream alive while also raising their four children -- Denise, Martin Luther III, Dexter Scott and Bernice Albertine. She worked to keep his ideology of equality for all people at the top of our nation’s agenda. She petitioned for over a decade to have her husband’s birthday observed as a national holiday, then watched with pride in 1983 as President Reagan signed the bill into law. The first federal holiday was celebrated in 1986.

Due to her recent stroke, Scott King missed the annual M.L. King holiday celebration in Atlanta earlier this month, but she did appear with her children at an awards dinner a couple of days earlier, smiling from her wheelchair but not speaking. The crowd gave her a standing ovation.
In the last years of her life, Scott King focused much of her energy on AIDS awareness and curbing gun violence.

What She Meant To Me

Before I start, I am dissappointed by the lack of national television coverage. Locally, the news did well and internet coverage has been great. But as for CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, and CNN Headline News, the coverage was not NEARLY what I had hoped. All they are talking about is that damn State of the Union Address that President George W. Bush will deliver tonight.

Hmmmmmph!

I am truly saddened by her death. To me, Mrs. King symbolized a firm matriarch of the movement for equality and justice. She meant a great deal to the people of Atlanta, GA. especially.

Most of us were not around Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was alive, but we all had an opportunity to get to know Coretta Scott King and she was definitely a compassionate and caring woman.

Without the movements started by her husband and continued by her, I would not be where I am today. Most of us wouldn’t. Many of us would be cleaning someone’s house or something domestic because we all would not have had the chance to get the quality educations that we have obtained. We would not have the skills to hold that wonderful position that pays us so well. I just hope people will realize what her legacy meant for this generation. So many take it for granted, but think of what your life would have been life without the civil rights movement and people like the King’s. What did she mean to you?

Mrs. King spoke at an anti-war demonstration in Sheep Meadow in Central Park on April 27, 1968. She did not hesitate to pick up her husband's civil rights efforts after his death.

What it be like bloggers?

Guess what?!?!?!

I actually got my butt outta bed this morning 40 mins earlier than usual and exercised before work!

Could it be that the old Nic that used to do this regularly is back? Well we’ll see won’t we.

I got to work and started sucking down coffee as fast as I could get down my damn throat but I swear the shyt didn’t work! I got to work at 7:30a and by 10:30a I crashing. Man I was about to fall asleep at my damned desk! It was so miserable.

My question is, was I feeling like that because this was my first day back after a 3-day weekend and being out of the office all last week at a conference, or is this because of getting up a little earlier and exercising? I mean damn!

Once I got past that, the rest of the day flew by. Thank goodness. Anyhoo, there is absolutely nothing spectacular to report about my day which included the fact that I will not be getting any tonight. I guess I'll just let it build up until tomorrow ;-)

So how about a few photos?!?!?!?!

This pic is my personal favorite in this collection.

I think I'll be me a shirt like this to (smile).

This is a photo Angelina Jolie's pregnant belly.
Whoever did this is so wrong for that!

Dad is crazy!

Keep in mind that she is on the liquor isle.

I don't think that she needs anything else to drink do you?

Baby Girl Found Floating In River

Sunday, January 29, 2006
I have just been posting my butt off this weekend. I guess I'm making up for not being able to get on the blog all week while I was out of town (smile).

When I saw this today I just had to post it about it.
A couple heard what they thought sounded like a cat coming from a floating plastic bag on yesterday (January 28th, 2006). Rescuers used a long tree branch to pull the bag from the water. Inside they found a baby girl, whom the medical officials have determined to be about 2 months old, dressed in a soaking wet pick dress but amazingly she was still alive. Apparently a wooden board inside that bag kept it a float. The baby is now being hospitalized and the authorities are looking for her mother.

I don’t know why but this reminds me of the story of Moses. The way his mother put him into the wooden basket and set him adrift along the Nile River so that his life would be spared from the wrath of Pharaoh. It is such a miracle that this beautiful baby girl was found alive in spite of the heat and her potential for drowning. I believe that she is destined for great things and that she will truly leave her mark on this world just like Moses did when he led the Hebrews to freedom.

I just hope that they are able to find her a good home. If not, I would surely take her (smile).

Amateur footage captured the moment when the bag was fished out and opened by a park worker. You can read more about the story and see the video footage of the dramatic rescue below.

Check out the story here

About My Week

The trip was absolutely wonderful. I thoroughly enjoyed getting away from home and the stress of my daily life for a few days. I was dreading the plane ride, but it went very smooth for the most part. I ran into one flight delay on the way there due to that bad weather in ATL (always). But other than that is was smooth.

The only thing that I did not like about the travel was my heavy azz bags! OMG, they were so heavy and the bag that I actually had to carry on to the plane was extra heavy because I took my laptop (which I did not even use because the hotel did not have free internet access. Those bastards were charging $10/day for access and I was like f*ck that).

Anywayz, like I was saying, my bags were so damn heavy that they had my damn back hurting.

Due to that flight delay on the way, I almost missed my connecting flight and the gate that the connection was at was so damned far. Now imagine me, with these short azz legs racing through the airport with that heavy azz bag and with flip flops on. I coulda died, but digress.

The hotel was beautiful. I loved my room with that king size bed. I slept like a baby while I was gone. Even though the trip was work related I literally felt like I was on vacation!

The conference was very informative and I learned a lot, especially with me being so new in my current job as a program evaluator, it was an excellent training for me.

Being that this was a evaluation training for a “Obesity Prevention Prog” you would not believe how healthy they had us eating, LOL. I have not eaten that many fruits and veggies in ages.
This is the menu:

Day 1: Traveling so you are on your own
Day 2: Breakfast was oatmeal, fruit, coffee, juice, etc. Lunch was salad topped with turkey (w/2 choices of fat free dressing), vegetarian type soup, and fruit. No dessert and only diet drinks, water, and unsweet tea.

Day 3: Breakfast was cereal (wheaties, total, or rice krispies), skim milk, berries for the cereal, other fruit (grapefruit, apples, oranges) coffee, juice, etc. For lunch we had a Mexican salad (salad stuff, salsa, lite sour cream, black beans, shredded chick, cheese, etc.) this was very good though. Some type of Mexican soup and fruit (pineapples, berries, watermelon, etc.). No dessert and only diet drinks, water, and unsweet tea.
Day 4: More of the same type healthy stuff!

We had a reception Tuesday night with more of the same healthy type shit, LOL. But I did have me a margarita at the reception because they also had a cash bar thank goodness.

If I ate like that all the time I would be so damn super thin and healthy. But I guess I will have to settle for thick-n-right cause ya girl can't do it like that all the time, LOL.

I did not do a whole lot, which includes me not making it to that Spurs game. I went walking downtown every evening to get something to eat for dinner. They have a river walk with lots of outside type vending and restaurants, so I went down there and eat my first night there.

These are photos of the River Walk in downtown San Antoino

All of my walking and sight seeing I did by myself for the most part. It was relaxing. I did not mind hanging by myself though at all. I just walked around (getting my little bit of exercise) and getting me some FAT for dinner every night except for one when I went to Subway.

Anyhoo, that’s about it for me this past week. How was you week?

Random Stuff

Saturday, January 28, 2006

This was sent to me by a friend of mine today and I just thought that I would share it! It is really damn shame and a trip. To set the scene for you, a young lady calls the radio station to play a prank on her husband, but this call goes SERIOUSLY WRONG and she is the one who ends up getting the surprise. You'll see! It's really fugged up!

It's Another Photo of Whitney

Whitney and someone named Jamal

Were you wondering the story behind this photo? Well, wait no more. They were taken at a convenient store in Alpharetta, Georgia and proves that the singer is back on crack or something. The word is that Whitney Houston is back on crack. Jamal Mitchell of Marietta, Georgia emailed us photos that he took with the singer. "The once-stunning Grammy winner was photographed at an Atlanta gas station at 4 a.m. one morning last month, looking disheveled and bizarre in pajama bottoms, and a $50,000 fur coat and a messy wig.

Jamal: I was pumping gas and noticed her driving up in a Porsche Cheyenne SUV. She was alone as she pulled into the parking lot of the convenient store near GA 400 in Alpharetta. I told my partner, "Yo man, that's Whitney Houston! " She got out of the vehicle and purchased 5 or 6 packs of cigarettes. I approached her and asked if I could take a picture. She said, "Sure, Do you have a camera?" I ran to my car where my camera was and she took three pictures with me. She was nice, but she wasn't the Whitney Houston I was use to seeing on TV and in music videos. She was very thin too and her breath smelled like liquor and smoke.

It's Just Me

Thursday, January 26, 2006

What it is bloggers!?!?!?!

I just wanted to send a shout out to let everyone know that I made it home safely and that the trip was great. Now don’t go getting all excited cause Nic did not do anything ALL THAT spectacular, but for me it was a good trip.

I literally just got home. I have been home less than a damn hour as yall can see my addicted azz is on the blog already, hahaha.

DAMN!!!

It is has been a long time since I have been with internet access for this many days. It was cool though.

Anyhoo, I do not think I’m going to work tomorrow. I’m too damn tire! Shyt I get off at 4:30 normally, not 9pm. I will get to use the time (4:30 – 9:00 = 4.5 hours) as comp time, so there is no time like the present to use it. I’ll make up the rest next week or use vacation time. I’ve been going since 7am this morning and traveling may not seem like much to some, but let me tell you, it is VERY tiring traveling with heavy ass luggage and a heavy shoulder bag.

Try racing through HUGH airports with that shyt and tell me how you feel.

My damn back is killing me right now!

I’m about to eat my Taco Bell and lay down some damn where.

By the way, does this look like it fits into my "so called" healthy eating plan that I am SUPPOSED to be embarking upon?

I will fill blogland in on the details of my trip in my next post if you are interested (smile).

¡Adios amigos!

May Not Be Able To Blog While I'm Gone ;-(

Sunday, January 22, 2006
Tomorrow I’m flying to San Antonio, Tx. for my first out of town trip with my new job! Yep, I’ve only been there for a month and I’m traveling already (smile). I'm going to attend an Obesity Prevention Program Evaluation Conference/Workshop. I know that I will need a lot of coffee to keep me up during these training sessions. I know how I am. I will be about to fall asleep up in those damn workshops.

This is an aerial shot of San Antonio's skyline.

In a way, I really excited about my trip because I’ve never been to San Antonio before. But at the same time, I am not looking forward to getting on that airplane at all. Yes, I have a fear of flying. I have at least 3 more trips planned between now and June (that I know of). I have 2 trips of Atlanta, Ga. and one to Denver, Co. So I guess I’d better get try to get over this little phobia I have huh? ~Sigh~

I’ve been trying not to think about it, not to worry about it but I just can’t help it.

I’ve spent most of the day trying to pack and get ready. I’m pissed because I cannot find my damn camera though. I have not been able to find it since Christmas and I’m about to go crazy. I’ve looked every damn where!

Anyhoo, I don’t know how much bloggin I’ll get to do while I’m gone. I wanted to take my laptop, but I don’t know if the hotel will have internet connections in the rooms. I think that they do have a business center though. Maybe I can get on the internet in there. I don’t know.

I found out a few days ago that I could have had the opportunity to catch a Spurs game while I’m there. On Tuesday Jan. 24th the Spurs play the Charlotte Bobcats. I say “could have” because, the agency that is hosting this conference I’m going to, the Center for Disease Control (CDC), was paying for conference participants to go to the game. The thing is that you had to let them know you wanted to attend the game by the deadline of Jan. 13th . Of course, no one told me this until after that deadline had already past.

I thought that was so fucked up. Don’t get me wrong. I am in no way a huge basketball fan. I wouldn’t consider myself a fan at all for that matter. But the opportunity to go to a pro basketball game for FREE. Hell yeah I wanted to go!

But that’s what happens when you are new on the job and completely outta the loop. Oh well, its water under the bridge now I guess. Damn!

Anyway, I’ll guess I’ll get off this dawg on computer and try to get some things done around the place.

If I don’t get to blog while I’m gone just remember that I’ll catch you guys up when I get back. Take care!

'American Idol' Twins Are In Double Trouble With The Law

Tuesday should have been the beginning of America's love affair with the smooth-singing Brittenum brothers. The 28-year-old identical Memphis twins wowed the "American Idol" judges during their audition with some Sam Cooke-like vocals and EASILY made it through to the next round!

The Brittenums had outstanding criminal warrants when the show aired. Both were charged in Rockdale County, Georgia, with forgery, theft by deception and financial identity fraud over the purchase of a 2005 Dodge Magnum last June. The brothers allegedly used another man's identity to buy the car.

They have yet to arrest the other brother, but I heard on the radio this morning that he has agreed to turn himself in.

Also check out: American Idol: 10 Reasons To Watch Again

NOT THEM AGAIN

Can they please let this rumor die. Damn!

They keep on talking about this shyt and Sanaa is pissed!

Actress Sanaa Lathan and Denzel Washington may have been a little too convincing during their love scene in the film “Out of Time.” I have never even seen the damn movie, but it must have been one hell of a love scene.

Maybe I should rent it this weekend if it was that damn HOT!

Anyhoo....

The actress tells Vibe magazine that she has been busy denying rumors of an affair with the Oscar-winning actor ever since the steamy shoot began more than three years ago in Miami.

“It got started because in the movie, I had a love scene with Denzel,” Lathan says in Vibe. “People took that and translated it into real life. They said I was pregnant with Denzel's child, and people were calling my mother, saying I'm having his baby. It's frustrating.”

According to the New York Daily News, Denzel’s wife of 22 years, Pauletta Washington, may be “furious” that the rumors are even being addressed. The paper quotes a source in the National Enquirer who said, “It isn't just one woman but ALL the women that Pauletta has heard about through the years.”

The tabloid reported in 1996 that Denzel took Pauletta on a $1 million second honeymoon after she accused him of cheating with another actress.

“Things got so bad between Denzel and Pauletta that he moved out of their house and into a hotel,” the Enquirer reported at the time. “Denzel and Pauletta went through the motions of a family holiday for their four kids, but things are still very shaky.”

Washington's rep tells the Daily News: “Before his last four films, Denzel has taken a room in a hotel to prepare for his roles. But he comes home at night. Their marriage is just fine.”

THE BROWN'S

The New York Daily News’ Lowdown section is reporting that Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown may be headed to splitsville. Can you believe this shyt? They have actually put this rumor in print! Serious.

After 14 years of wedded bliss and blazin, Bobby, 36, is reportedly telling the homies that he is separating from his 42-year-old wife and mother of his 12-year-old daughter. Hmmmm....

During a recent event at the Foxwoods Casino in Mashantucket, Conn, Brown was spotted backstage trying to holla at several women, while SWV, Guy and Blackstreet performed on stage, reports Lowdown.

“While flirting with a bunch of women, they asked, 'What's up with your wife?' Bobby said, 'We ain't together no more. We're getting a divorce,'" says the spy. Does't every married man say that anyway. Carry on.....

Meanwhile, Brown has expressed interest in bringing the reunited SWV along to perform on his planned comeback tour. During the performance at Foxwoods, Guy singer Teddy Riley coaxed Brown on stage to perform “My Prerogative.”

JAMIE AND EVA?

Longoria and Jamie Foxx showed up together at CAA's after-party at L.A. hot spot Chaya. But despite Internet reports of them tongue-kissing, Longoria's pals swear it never happened, and that lovely Longoria is still with San Antonio Spur Tony Parker.

But Longoria and Foxx were spotted later at Prince's post-post-Globes party at the pint-size funkster's Beverly Hills mansion. Prince played his guitar to the delight of partygoers while Sheila E. performed with a salsa band.

Longoria swears they are only GOOD friends yall! I saw her say that on Entertainment Tonite a couple of days ago. Uh-Ha!

By the way, Jaime is looking pretty damn scrumptous in that pic! I never really though about him in THAT WAY before (smile). Hubba, Hubba!!!

PAY YA DAMN CHILD SUPPORT

Now this is just crazy to me. I was sent this article today by a friend of mine and the title immediately caught my attention:

"Police: Man faked death to avoid child support: 'Ultimate deadbeat dad' now owes more than $30,000 for two kids"

So naturally I'm like I have got to read this shyt here.

To sum it up, the police have arrested a man accused of faking his death more than 25 years ago to avoid paying child support. Now this bastid had one of his trifling baby cousins to call Family Court back in 1979 and say that he died during a bar fight in Alabama.

Ol boy was caught on Tuesday and put in jailed. He now owes more than $30,000 in child support and faces an escape charge. He had been living about 150 miles away from where he disappeared. To top it all off, he even had the nerve to be using his real name for about 20 years. The investigation was reopened last week when police got a tip from one of his ex-wives that he was alive and living in Myrtle Beach. A fingerprint analysis confirmed his identity.

Now is this crazy or what? And how did his ex know where he was? Hmmmmmmm….that’s pretty damn interesting right there, LOL. Read more here:

Baby Mariah Fan!

I know some of you may have seen this before but it is just so cute and funny to me, I couldn't help but put it on here. My question is, how much must her mother have listened to this song bor this baby to know that sone like that?!?!?! LOL

Just Thinking Out Loud

Wednesday, January 18, 2006

Okay yall, why can’t I do right?

Now, so I claim – I need to be eating better (more nutritious and healthy). I’m supposed to start back exercising, which I had been doing faithfully 3-4 days a week up until Thanksgiving.

But I have no clue what happened after that. Could it be that the delicious fried turkey has possessed me? Is that peach cobbler still weighing me down?

For some reason, I just can’t seem to get back into the groove! I know that I need to do this. Not as a New Years resolution, but for me, my health, and my well being.

I’m almost ashamed to tell yall what I’m bout to grub on now. Why did I go to the place and get me a combo plate that came with chicken wings, gizzards and fries!

What?!?!?!

Did I just say that I was ashamed……GOSH!

Now how am I gonna reach my goal of becoming a healthier, fitter me when I keep eating shyt like this:

Instead of this?

I don’t know, maybe I’ll get my act together soon. And to think I’m going to a fricking Obesity Prevention conference next week in Texas and look what I’m eating! As if next week is going to be any better though. I’ll be in San Antonio at the conference for a whole week, so what yall think Imma be eating then. Damn shole ain’t gonna be salad! You know it is when you are outta town eating out every night and shyt!

Damn dawg, what is I'z gonna do?!?!?!

Dammit get it together Nic!

Speaking of chunking up, I know yall have seen these pics of Janet floating around the email system right.

What's up with Janet?

Now this is a photo that I wish I'd had for yesterday's post on the Queen getting her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame!
