The Youngest Birth in the World

Tuesday, April 04, 2006
I read this story today that has been authenticated at several websites as being true. I was truly amazed by what I read, so I just had to share this!

Apparently, the parents worried sick over their their five-year-old daughter’s growing abdomen. Lina Medina's parents thought their daughter had a huge abdominal tumor and when medics in their remote village in Peru’s Andes could find no cure, they decided to take her to Dr. Gérado Lozada at a hospital in the town of Pisco, Peru .

Dr. Gérado Lozada was told by Lina's father that she had been having regular periods since age three, but they had stopped about 7 1/2 months prior to the visit. He listened to the young girl's abdomen with a stethoscope, and heart a tiny second heartbeat. An X-Ray was also performed, after which there could be no doubt… to the doctors' astonishment, five-year-old Lina Medina was about seven months pregnant.

Among the many articles that I read about Lina, in one the father said she had her first menstrual cycle at two-and-a-half, but in another article, the doctor later confirmed that her cycle actually began at 8 months old. She became pregnant at aged four years and eight months.

When doctors performed the caesarean to deliver her baby, they found she already had fully mature sexual organs. The child (boy), weighing 5.9 pounds (2,700 grams), was well formed and in good health. Child and mother were able to leave the clinic after only a few days.

At four years old she had already developed breasts as well as pubic hair, her body proportions were a bit amazing and her bone hardening a bit advanced, things that are often observed in cases of such premature pregnancy.

Throughout the written world, there does not exist another case that happened at a younger age, which leaves one to think that this is the youngest mother in the world .

No one has ever established who was the father of Medina’s child, or confirmed she became pregnant after being raped.

Lina's son, named Gerardo (after Dr. Gérado Lozada, chief physician of the hospital in Pisco where Lina's pregnancy was diagnosed), did not learn until he was 10 years old that the woman he thought to be his sister was in fact his mother. For the longest time, Gerardo was raised in the Medina household as though he were Lina's baby brother.

The photo on the right is of Lina,Dr. Gérado Lozada, and her son.

Gerardo died in 1979, but Lina's second son, born in 1972 (thirty-three years after his brother), now lives in Mexico. Lina and her husband currently reside in the "Little Chicago" district of Lima, Peru.

Now is this unimaginable or what?

What are your thoughts?

Wow, I had never heard this story before. This is amazingly sad. I can't imagine someone so young going through this. Wow again.
Shawn I couldn't agree with you more!
OMG! Someone raped this girl at four years old? Her parents should be put under the jail...
I wonder why the paternity was never established. Surely she must know who impregnated her. If that happened here it would be assumed that the father did it. Anyway, it's an amazing story.
Niki - I just can't imagine how someone could do this to a child!

FreakyD - You know what, you bring up a very good point! I don't know why I didn't think of that. I think that it is VERY possible that her father did do it. No wonder they mysteriously could never find the rapist!

This is so outrageous and disturbing!

In addition to the trauma of the initial molestation, it must have completely confused this little girl, having her body morph out of all recognition with an unrecognized pregnancy. Then having major surgery to deliver the baby and trying to recover afterwards. The poor little thing.

Having your first child is scary enough when you're an adult, so I can’t imagine what this had to be like for a child. A very young child at that.

      Nic,

You and FD hit the nail on the head! That was EXACTLY what I was thinking.

There is no doubt in my mind that this abuse was going on either in this family or throughout the village that they lived in. Her pregnancy made it clear what was no doubt going on.

I wonder if they could do DNA now on decendents of this family and village to see if they were involved.
Anon - I bet they could use DNA to find out who the father was now. But of course you know that will never happen. People (the decendants) aren't gonna just volunteer their DNA for this and with out a "crime" the courts cannot order DNA tests.
This story is sad, however even tho' it's very easy to say that the father did it, there is no proof! Why not someone else in the area like an uncle or something. Even today little children are being abused by babysitters and family members. We can't always blame the parents because sometimes the parents are one of the last people to know.

I wish all this new DNA technology was as good as it is now back then, then there wouldn't be anything to take a qtip to the cheek and get to the bottom of it.
Okay, the first thing I thought was, "fraud." But it looks true.

I wonder what happened to this little girl - I mean, if she had a pituitary disorder, did that mean that she had other problems - did she age faster than normal? Think about this, though. She only has so many eggs, and I wonder if she had a premature menapause as well.

Thanks for the somewhat disturbing but nonetheless fascinating article.
ok what are the odds that an ovulating 4 year old would get molested/raped by a random person. this is ridiculous.
Oh my! This is disturbing. I agree with the others...someone in her family had to be involved.
That's terrible. Nobody should have to go through that at that age. Also the potential complications. Wow.
DAAAMZZZZZ i thought my 14 n 15 year old cuzins were to young in becoming mothers!!! now 5 years!!! WOW!!!
i wanna know who the daddy is!
WOW...that's all I can say. I wonder if she remembers who the daddy could be...needlesstosay I think we all have a good idea lol
Amazed...someone should have been chraged with rape.
      tj
i'm pretty much with everyone lese, "WOW" and "who is the father?!?!?"
Khalli – I completely understand. I think that this is amazing to, but the true of the matter is that any woman/girl that has a menstrual cycle can become pregnant no matter if they are 5 or 80. I’ve seen on the news 8 and 9 year old girls that were pregnant and this is in recent times! I was in shock to see them to. OMG and if I’m not mistaken, both of these little girls were Hispanic living in the U.S. The story does sound for fetched but I believe that it could and did happen.

LadyNay – You bring up a good point. It may not have been her father but there is a very strong chance that it was him or another relative, but I guess we’ll never know now.
i'm just speechless. i wonder if that is a precursor of things to come for the 'little girls' of today. it seems like they're also maturing at an amazingly scary clip. i mean, they're already discussing anal sex in elementary schools!
      Wow Nikki!

I believe that it is a precursor of whats to come. These girls are maturing earlier and earlier now.

I cannot beliive that these little kids are talking about anal sex.
      I'm seriously outdone.

WHERE DO YOU COME UP WITH THESE!?!?!
There is this tongue in cheek joke in youth ministry circles that children are going to enter puberty in infancy soon.

At the beginning of the century the average age of onset of puberty for girls was 16. Today it is 11 or 12. And that is an average.

Also, early onset of puberty is often a precursor to exposure to sexual activity. Thus, if you see a kid that is entering puberty at an abnormally young age in my line of work I am automatically suspicious of sexual abuse. It is kinda natures way of having the body catch up with what is happening to it.

As a public health person I am sure you are aware that a lot of people also tie in hormones in meat that people consume with extremely early onset of puberty as well. This seemed to be confirmed in P.R. when there was a whole community of girls entering puberty at 5 or 6 years old.

There are also some theories about exposure to sexual thinking and behavior in media and the like also influencing early onset of puberty. Right now, that seems a little sketchy to me.

As a public health person, how do you account for racial differences in average onset of puberty?
