How Stella Got Her Groove Back

Wednesday, November 09, 2005

Today Oprah had a drama-filled show with, Terry McMillan, author of the book "How Stella Got Her Groove Back". This book was based partially on the intimate details of her own island romance with a man 23 years her junior. It started on vacation when 43-year-old Terry spotted 20-year-old Jonathan Plummer!

If you missed the show you can check out the details of what transpired here:

ok The Oprah show with Terry McMillan was one of the best I have seen in a long time, mostly because of terry mcmillan herself, she is so animated and it was great watching her interact with oprah and j. plummer. also, i don't know if it was just me but he looked gay in every picture they showed of him. too bad hindsight is the only one that is 20/20.

I don't think Terry's over him. She acts a little nutty to me, although I know she's intelligent. One thing about her is that whatever is on her mind, she is going to tell it like she's feeling at that moment in time! (hahaha)
I don't know about that bathtub thing; I think more happened than what was said and it was almost like she dominated the conversation at that point
because he may have wanted to tell everything about that night. To me, it appeared as if she was the mother and he was the son...almost as if he was asking for permission to say certain things and based on her facial expressions, he'd make his comments to not hurt her or not be totally truthful about his feelings. Like when Oprah asked him if he fell in love with someone, he really looked like he wanted to say Yes, but Terry chimed in and said he'd better not say he was in love because I can't handle hearing that right now, so he said No and Oprah pulled it out of him to say he was in like with the person. He was caught lying quite a few times, so he was contracdictive in a lot of his statements. Although he said he didn't know he was gay before; I think he always knew he was attracted to men and when he found an opportunity to leave Jamaica and come over her to the US
and be able to live freely as a gay man, he took the opportunity. He may have loved Terry, but I think it was more as a good friend than as a soul mate. He still wants to be friends, but I think it's still too fresh for her to be his buddy. You can tell he's so much younger than her and maybe she made a mistake in marrying someone 20+ years younger...she could have had all the sex in the world with him without taking the plunge. Maybe it's me, but he looked just like a gal on that picture that they showed of him; I
just don't believe she didn't notice that feminine quality about him before. When he walked out, I was like yeah he's been a gal! (hahaha) That ain't nothing new!
Believe it or not, I still ended up missing the show. I did read the 'transcripts' because they were posted on Oprah's website. I agree with a lot of what you are saying and I definitely agree that it seemed a lot like a mother and son, like she was very domineering! I also noticed that he said that he did love her and that he still does, just not the way that she needs or wants him to. That statement says a lot to me, because I think that even when they got married he 'loved her' but he was not 'in love' with her, you know what I mean. This goes back to the fact that he always new that he was gay. That is why he could and did love her, but he was not in love with her.

Plus, this moring on the Doug Bank's Morning Radio Show, there was a woman (named Michelle) that called in to say that she knew Mr. Johnathan, before he make Terry and that he was gay back then. She used to work with him on the island and she said that women have always been attracted to him because he has a nice body (her words not mine). He would tell these women that he did not "want no woman" (again, her words not mine). She went on to say that he loved feminine things like getting his nails done and that he liked to "smell like a lady", wearing women's perfume and stuff! Michelle stated that when he met Terry, he told her that, "I met this lady and I had to put it down on her, she's going to take me to America. When you see something that you want, you have to put it down to get it". It sounds to me like he was trying to work what he had to get what he wanted, ya feel me. Michelle went on to say that it was not so much that he just wanted to come here, but it was that he liked was he was getting. While Terry was there on vacation, she was basically wining and dining him. Buying him all kinds of stuff including jewelry and cologne, so he felt like he would be living high on the hog by coming home with her.

I think that Terry really knew what the deal was the whole time to. I mean, people have said that he has always looked just like he looked yesterday on the show meaning that he has always looked gay or feminine. Is it that she is in denial or just too embarrassed to admit that she had suspicions or that she knew all along? If that is the case, I surely couldn’t blame her. I’d be embarrassed to. This whole thing is just a trip!

And what’s up with her spending the night with him recently? My girl said that he'd seen her naked before so it was no big deal. Since he didn't have a bathtub at his place, so they shared her tub, but NOTHING happened! Uhhhhhhmmmm, I don’t know about yall, but something about that don’t sound right to me. I find that impossible to believe. Sharing a bathtub with your soon to be ex (or ex) that just dropped the bombshell on you that he is GAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE, I don’t think so!

I recently read excerpts from the divorce decree between Terry McMillan and Jonathan Plummer, and it blows me away to think that Terry McMillan would be so cold hearted towards the love of her life. I don't think that the words she is using comes from shock or disbelief or a feeling of betrayal. In the decree, Jonathan clearly stated that he didn't know he was gay when they got married. In Jamaica, homosexuality is frowned upon so badly that you could lose your life for just coming out. Why would he think he was gay living there and such a homophobic country, where as when he brought his gorgeous self to the United States, California for that fact, he was faced with homosexuals everywhere. His tendencies were bound to surface. Terry McMillan made some of her fortune from him, after all he was part of the inspiration for "How Stella Got her Groove Back," or should it be "How Terry Got Her Groove Back?" She wrote a book which evolved into a box office hit, which portrayed Jonathan as character "Winston" and didn't share any of the profits from this success. With no Jonathan, there wouldn't have been a Winston, so she really should think before she exercises her right to call him a "faggot" or "queer" as quoted in their divorce decree.

Wait a minute, you don't suppose they might be getting their groove on-on the DL, do you?

Oh goodness, say it aint so!!! I truly hope Terry is not THAT caught up with him that she'd continue to sleep with him after all of this. Sister please check this one off as a loss and take you talents and possessions and roll on! Just brush the dirt off your shoulder. He was a liar and a fraud. No better than JL King. Hell, go write a book and purge!

Okay, so I saw some of the show right and it was obvious that Terry was definitely hurt by ole Jonny boy's actions. Terry said she had forgiven him and was ready to move on, but in order to move on, she has to be ready to release the hurt and and pain, which it does not seem that she is ready to do yet. And honestly, I probably would still be pissed too and I know I sure as hell wouldn't be sitting next to him on a tv show talking about I know he loved me, when he's proven that he doesn't love anyone but himself!

i personally don't think that he deserves to have any of her money. Terry stated that she finished the book before she flew him to America. also, my dog Oprah conducted a good interview because she got those answers out of him and called him on it when he wasn't asking the question. i recorded the show with my dvr and watched it twice!
